What's inside a pop-up event WiFi kit
A pop-up event network has one job: work perfectly for a few days in a paddock or a hall with no permanent infrastructure, then pack down and leave. This is a teardown of what is actually in the rack and why each piece earns its spot. The core: router and switch
The heart of the kit. The router is the traffic controller: it hands out addresses, manages the internet uplink, and keeps the different parts of the network separated, so staff, EFTPOS and public WiFi never tread on each other. The core switch is the junction box everything else plugs into. Get the core wrong and nothing downstream works, which is why it is the first thing built and tested.
Distribution: the access points
The access points are what people's phones actually connect to. You spread several around the site so there is coverage where the crowd is, at the entry, the stage, the food and the bar, and they all trace back to the core switch. One access point by the door will not cover a field. Spreading the coverage is the whole point of distribution.
Reaching the far corner: a point-to-point link
There is always a corner the cable will not reach: a second stage, a back gate, a car park across the site. A point-to-point wireless link bridges that gap. One radio sits at the core and one at the far end, and together they act like an invisible cable, so that corner gets the same network as everywhere else.
The uplink: bonded or backup 4G
The event's internet usually comes in over mobile, and one 4G connection is a single point of failure. So the kit uses a bonded or failover pack: several SIMs, often on different carriers, combined so that if one drops or gets congested when the crowd arrives, the others carry the load. This is the piece that keeps EFTPOS and ticket scanning alive when a whole crowd of phones hits the same tower at once. Power: battery and PoE
There is no permanent power, so the rack runs off a battery and PoE kit. The access points and the point-to-point radios draw their power down the same network cable that carries their data, which is PoE, so there is no separate power run to each device: one cable per access point. The battery keeps the core alive through a generator changeover or a flat spot.
The health logger
A small logger sits in the rack watching temperature, humidity and voltage, and alerts someone the moment they drift. Why it matters:
- A sealed rack in the sun cooks. The logger warns you before the gear overheats and drops out.
- A sagging battery voltage is the early sign of a power problem, caught before it takes the network down.
- Humidity creeping up in a damp marquee flags condensation risk on the electronics.
You want to hear that the rack is in trouble from a quiet alert, not from an angry radio call when the bar's EFTPOS has already died.
Why events break without each piece
- No distribution access points means coverage only near the rack, with dead zones out in the crowd.
- No point-to-point link means the far corner has nothing.
- A single 4G uplink with no bonding chokes the moment the crowd arrives.
- No battery or PoE means one power hiccup drops the whole network.
- No health logger means the first you hear of a fault is when it is already down.
The short version
A pop-up event kit is a router and core switch, distribution access points for coverage, a point-to-point link for the far corner, a bonded or backup 4G uplink so the internet survives the crowd, all on a battery and PoE rig, plus a health logger watching temperature, humidity and voltage. Every part is there because events break at exactly that point.
